Szczecin jest jedyną polską metropolią położoną praktycznie na granicy, oddziałującą na otaczający ją region po stronie polskiej i niemieckiej. To sprawia, że jest najbardziej i najszybciej dostępnym, najbliższym dla zagranicznych gości miastem w Polsce, codziennie przez nich odwiedzanym. To sprawia również, że Polacy osiedlają się po niemieckiej stronie pracując w Polsce lub mieszkając w Polsce pracują w Niemczech. Transgraniczność sprzyja przepływowi mieszkańców, wzajemnym kontaktom i europejskiej integracji.
W Szczecinie znajduje się wielonarodowy korpus wojsk NATO, który początkowo opierał się na militarnej współpracy duńsko-niemiecko-polskiej.
Dużą grupę studentów na szczecińskich uczelniach stanowią Skandynawowie.

Stettin ist die einzige polnische Metropole, die praktisch an der Grenze liegt und Einfluss auf die umliegende Region auf polnischer und deutscher Seite hat.
